Bertha Engles Ferguson, age 100, of Lake Crystal, died Sunday, October 24, 2010 at the Luther Memorial Home in Madelia.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Butternut, rural Lake Crystal. Interment will be in Lake Crystal Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Memorials are preferred to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church or to the donor's choice. Arrangements are with Lake Crystal Mortuary.
Bertha was born on January 1, 1910 in Cambria Township, Blue Earth County, MN. She was the daughter of Thomas and Mabel Jones and was the youngest of five children. She attended school in District 78 and went to Lake Crystal for her eighth year. Bertha was a 1927 graduate of Lake Crystal High School. She was united in marriage to Dayton E. Engles on October 23, 1929 and they farmed in Lincoln Township until 1941. Bertha and Dayton purchased a farm in Butternut Township, where they would live until his death in 1974. Bertha married Rueben G. Ferguson on October 31, 1975 and moved to Parker, S.D. They wintered many years in Texas and Arizona. Following Rueben's death in 1994, Bertha came back to the Lake Crystal area. She moved to Country Neighbors in May 2000, the Lake Crystal Health Care Center in 2007, and in 2008 to the Luther Memorial Home in Madelia. Bertha was a past member of Jerusalem Presbyterian Church and a current member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. She enjoyed golfing and playing cards.
Bertha is survived by her son, Ralph (Eda) Engles of Lake Crystal; two step-sons and their families, Larrie Ferguson of Urbandale, IA and Alan Ferguson of Las Vegas, NV; three grandchildren, Kristine Wolff of Granite Falls, Jim (Lou Ann) Engles of Carlisle, IA, and John (Donna) Engles of Lake Crystal; nine great-grandchildren, Jen (Matt) Hasty, Jodi (Richard) Nelson, Michael Thomsen, Jay (Ashley) Engles, Stacie Engles, Pat Thomsen, Lauren (fianc"e, Dustin Hughes) Engles, Brian Engles, and Ryan Engles; also nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Dayton and Rueben; three brothers, Hayden, John Milton, and Willard Jones; sister, Ethel Davis; stepdaughter, Elaine Sagnes; stepson, Dale Ferguson.
