Kathryn Marie Mathews, age 90, of Lake Crystal, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at Crystal Seasons Living Community in Lake Crystal.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 23, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church in Lake Crystal, with Rev. Randal Lubbers officiating. Interment will be in Cambria Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church or the donor's choice. Arrangements are with Lake Crystal Mortuary.
Kathryn was born on February 18, 1920 to Victor and Lillie (Lindstrom) Johnson in rural Hamill, S.D. She was baptized at Hamill Lutheran Church. In 1924 after the death of her father, the family moved to Wausa, NE where she attended school. Kathryn was confirmed at Thabor Lutheran Church on July 14, 1935. She moved with her family to Lake Crystal in 1938. Kathryn was united in marriage to Edward Mathews on September 12, 1941 in Lake Crystal. They farmed in rural Lake Crystal until their retirement in 1982. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lake Crystal. Kathryn and Ed enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Winterhaven, FL. A devoted and loving wife and mother, her greatest joy came from caring for her family and home.
Kathryn is survived by her loving husband, Edward of Lake Crystal; daughter, Kathleen Greenough and her husband, John of Lake Crystal; daughter-in-law, Esther Mathews of New Ulm; six special grandchildren, Steven (Wendy) Mathews of Lakeville, Kaye (Steve) Johnson of Buffalo, Tom Mathews of Bloomington, Kristina (Jared) Sorenson of Mankato, Mike (Janelle) Greenough of Lake Crystal, and Matt (Tammi) Greenough of Lake Crystal; fifteen special great grandchildren, Elizabeth and James Mathews, Christian, Tucker, Kylie, and Caleb Johnson, Robbie, Rachel, Reagan, and Rinnah Sorenson, Kaitlyn, Paige, and Alyssa Greenough, and Carter and Carson Greenough; sister-in-law, Virginia Mae Johnson of Wausa, NE; also many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son in infancy and son, James in 1997; sister, Virginia Beaudette and two brothers, Leland Johnson and Merlin Johnson.
