Herbert Joseph Mocol, age 82, of Mankato, died Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at Immanuel-St. Josephs Hospital in Mankato.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Mankato with Rev. Karl Voelker, S.J. and Rev. Michael Izen concelebrating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 pm Friday at Mankato Mortuary with a 4 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Mankato Area Catholic Schools or Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
Herbert was born April 6, 1923 in Mankato to Joseph and Ida (Izen) Mocol. He graduated from Mankato Loyola High School in 1941 and attended Mankato Commercial College. On June 17, 1947, he was united in marriage to Mary Genevieve Lohse at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
Herb was the President of Mocol Super Markets and the Past-President of Mocol Truck Line, Inc. From 1970-1974, he served as City Council President and was elected as Mayor of the City of Mankato from 1974-1986. Herb also served as President for the Minnesota Coalition of Outstate Cities from 1976-1977 and from 1985-1986.
Herb was a lifetime member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. He was a former board member of Mankato Chamber of Commerce and American Heart Association County Chapter, former vice chairman of Mankato Industrial Development Corporation and Valley Industrial Development, former chairman of the Area Sister Cities, past president of Mankato Heart Health, former member of Immanuel-St. Josephs Hospital Corporation, Mankato Rotary Club, Eagles Club, Knights of Columbus Third and Fourth Degree, and Catholic Order of Foresters. Herb was active in the local and State Democratic Party and devoted time and energy for the betterment of the community.
Survivors include wife, Mary Genevieve Mocol of Mankato; 11 children, Joseph (Darlene) Mocol of Mankato, Diane (Jeffrey) Higgins of West St. Paul, Stephen (Kimberly) Mocol of Burnsville, David Mocol of Eagan, Kathryn Mocol of Mankato, Thomas Mocol of Mankato, Gregory Mocol of Mankato, George Mocol of Mankato, Jean (John) Henning of Fargo, ND, James (Kristin) Mocol of Waconia, Christopher (Angela) Mocol of Eagan; 19 grandchildren, brother, Joseph Mocol of Mankato, nieces, nephews, and cousins, including Nick (MaryJo) Khalil, who resided with the family while attending school. Preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Mary Mocol.
