Charles E. Evers, age 74, of North Mankato died Monday, September 5, 2005 at Immanuel-St. Josephs Hospital in Mankato.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 8, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. Paul Meierding officiating. Burial in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Mankato. Visitation 4 - 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mankato Mortuary and continues one hour before services at church on Thursday. Memorials may be given to the donors choice.
Charles was born February 28, 1931 in St. Paul. He was the son of Genevieve and Joseph Evers. He attended schools in Sleepy Eye, Springfield, and New Ulm. Charles served his country from 1948 to 1952 in the U.S. Army and during the Korean Conflict. He received the CIB, Korean service medal with five bronze stars and a Purple Heart. He later served with the New Ulm National Guard. Charles was employed by Walner Construction in New Ulm and Lundin Construction in Mankato. He was married to Ivona Cook in 1951 and they later divorced. He married Geraldine Wachtel on October 7, 1978 in Mankato. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Lifetime member of VFW Post #1648 of New Ulm, American Legion Post #518 of North Mankato and the Disabled American Veterans. Charles enjoyed hunting, fishing, country and old time music, Elvis, sports, and his dogs.
Charles is survived by his wife, Geraldine Jeri of North Mankato; two sons, Lon (Audrey) Evers, Jon (Chris) Evers all of New Ulm; step-daughter, Diane Sjolander of Mankato; eight step-sons, Darryl (Tammy) Wachtel of Eagle Lake, Joel (Marlyce) Wachtel of Mankato, Mike Wachtel and fianc Wendy Barr of Janesville, Jim Wachtel, Jon (Cindee) Wachtel all of Mankato, Eddie (T.J) Wachtel of Hutchinson, Pete (Julie) Wachtel of North Mankato, Marty Wachtel of St. Peter; thirty grandchildren; twenty four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Tom (Patti) Evers, Doug (Denise) Evers all of New Ulm; five sisters, Shirley (Ardell) Menk of Wichita, KS, Marjorie (Marven) Manderfeld, Sharon Clyne, Linda Hanson, all of New Ulm, Judy Jacobson of Hutchinson; two brothers-in-law, Robert Ring and Arlen Gehrt of New Ulm; three sisters-in-law, Paula Evers and Betty Evers of New Ulm and Jean Lindberg of North Mankato; many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, three sisters, and two great grandchildren.
