Gladys Louise Thurston, age 93, of Mankato died Friday, October 17, 2008 at Mankato House Health Care Center.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 20, 2008 at Grace United Methodist Church, Vernon Center with Rev. Jean Sidner officiating. Burial will be in Vernon Center Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Sunday at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour before service at church on Monday. Memorials may be given to Grace United Methodist Church or the Salvation Army.

Gladys was born November 5, 1914 to Nilus and Doris Anna Marie (Hecht) Greenwell in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The family moved to Garden City in 1923 and Gladys graduated from Garden City High School. Gladys was united in marriage to Raymond Kelley on May 15, 1937 in Estherville, IA. Raymond died November 5, 1971. She later married Gerald Thurston on February 13, 1976 in North Mankato, he died in 1994. Gladys was a nurses aide at Hillcrest Health Care Center for seven years. She also served twenty four years as a 4-H Leader and Sunday school teacher. She did volunteer work for 17 years at the Salvation Army and also at the Mesa Arizona Elementary School. Gladys enjoyed card playing, crafts, sewing, and reading.

Gladys is survived by her daughter, Dorothy (Gordon) Kopischke of Vernon Center; step-daughter, Jane (William) Pfeffer of Madelia; four grandchildren, Cindy (Rick) Pautzke and special pet, Indy of Mankato, Todd (Kellie) Kopischke of Vernon Center, Troy (Amanda) Kopischke of Hamel, Tania (Ryan) Allen of Kansas City, MO; several step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, James, Andrew, and Elizabeth Kopischke, Cole, Connor, and Ava Kopischke; sister, Ada Beise of Casa Grande, AZ, brother, Dale (Donna) Greenwell of Olivia; sister-in-law, Louise Erickson of Blair, WI; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; two sisters, Jane Carlson and LaVon Fredrichs; one brother, Bob Greenwell; two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Michael Kopischke.
