Marie Lydia (Streich) Jones, retired teacher of rural Lake Crystal, passed away peacefully at Oaklawn Health Care Center in Mankato on August 24, 2008, attaining the age of 86.
Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m., Thursday, August 28, 2008 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in North Mankato with Rev. Vance Becker officiating. Burial will be in Minneopa Cemetery, rural Mankato. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Memorials may be given to the church's building fund or to your favorite charity.
Marie was born on July 14, 1922 in rural Hutchinson and was the daughter of Arthur and Lydia (Baur) Streich. As an infant she and her family moved to Sanborn, MN. She attended Zion Lutheran Church school for grades one thru eight. She graduated from Sanborn High School in 1940. Marie then attended Mankato Teachers College graduating from the two year teaching program. She then taught at the Gilfillan School (before Farmfest), Comfrey and Northfield. She completed her Bachelor of Science degree by attending summer school, night classes and correspondence study. She graduated with her BS degree in 1952. She then taught at Nicollet and Lake Crystal following her marriage.
She married Kenneth Evan Jones on June 7, 1952 at Sanborn, MN and came to live in Judson, MN. To this union they were blessed with two children, Elizabeth Marie and Timothy Kenneth Jones. Marie loved teaching and enjoyed the students she taught during her 35 year career. In her retirement she and Kenneth enjoyed nine years as winter Texans. Marie enjoyed crafts, sewing, cooking, cake decorating, crossword puzzles, reading, and writing to friends and relatives. She taught Sunday School and Bible School.
Her memory is cherished by her two children, Elizabeth Marie Jones and Timothy Kenneth Jones both of Judson; she is also survived by two brothers-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth in 2005; her parents; four sisters, Ruth Wedge, Norma Robertson, Margaret Tomschin, and Elly Anderson; two brother-in-laws; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
