William Bill John Wilking, 86, passed away Sunday evening, June 26, 2005, peacefully at his home in Belgrade Township, Nicollet County after a lengthy illness with his family at his bedside.
Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Mankato with Rev. Charles Vannieuwenhoven officiating. Burial will be in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Mankato Mortuary and one hour prior to the service at church on Thursday.
Mr. Wilking was born June 17, 1919 to William and Helena (Wels) Wilking in Granby Township, Nicollet County. He attended Nicollet schools and Trinity Lutheran Church of Nicollet. He bought his lifelong residence, a farm in Belgrade Township in March 1941, shortly before his marriage to Verona R. Enter on April 22, 1941 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Nicollet.
Mr. Wilking farmed until 1976. He worked in the transformer department at Midwest Electric, a division of GE, for 17 years until his retirement in March of 1983. He was a member of St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church since 1952, where he had served on church council and was an usher for many years. For 40 years, he helped his wife, Verona with delivery and set-up of the many wedding cakes she baked for the areas brides. He was one of the original members of the Nicollet Conservation Club. He enjoyed his cabin on Lake Washington and visits from his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Donna and Paul Prahl, Joan and Richard Timm, Nancy and Stewart Steele all of North Mankato; brother, Walter Wilking of Mankato; sister, Leona Freitag of Gaylord; seven grandchildren, Paul Prahl Jr., Michael Prahl and wife, Linda, Troy Steele and wife, Nicole, Barb Balfe and husband, Chris, Jeffrey Timm and wife, Danielle, Julie Risto and husband, Nathan, Becky Timm; eight great-grandchildren, Thomas and William Prahl, Teresa Hebert, Christopher, Charlie, and Jordan Balfe, Tyler and Zachary Steele; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Verona in October 2001; a grandson, Ronald Prahl; and a son-in-law, Paul Sniff.
