John Bernard Zyskowski, age 88, entered his heavenly home on Monday, April 18, 2005 at the St. Peter Health Care Center, St. Peter, MN. A service will be held at the St. Peter HCC gathering room on Wednesday, April 20, 2005 at 11:00 a.m., with Pastors Greg Stone and Bruce Pope officiating. Visitation and viewing is one hour prior to the service. A funeral service will also be held in Iron River, MI on Friday, April 22, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at the Langenberg Funeral Home, with Pastor Kent Angeloff officiating. Visitation and viewing is one hour prior to the service. There will be military accord rites at 10:45 a.m. Burial will be at the Resthaven Cemetery, Iron River, MI. Memorials are preferred to the Iron River Assembly of God Church where he worshiped, or to the St. Peter HCC Residents Fund. The St. Peter HCC staff is to be highly commended for their exceptional care and compassionate love for John who resided there since October of 2000, and Linda since January of 2004.
John was born on February 9, 1917 in Stambaugh, MI. He was the son of Walter and Michalina (Lowendowska) Zyskowski. He attended school in Iron River, MI. John married Linda Besonen from Trout Creek, MI on December 24, 1939 in Chicago, IL. They moved back to Iron River, where John worked for M.A. Hanna Co. as an iron miner. He left the company to serve his country during WWII as a Seaman First Class stationed in Hawaii and Rhode Island. John was discharged in 1946, and again worked for M.A. Hanna until his retirement at age 55 with a disability.
John and Linda wintered in Florida for many years. He enjoyed the great outdoors, fishing, hunting, and gardening. Everyone was his friend and he loved to chew the fat . He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his off the cuff quips, his uncommon wisdom and his love for family and God.
John is survived by his wife, Linda; three children, Gerald James (Marilyn) Zyskowski of North Mankato, Daniel Zyskowski of Iron River, MI, Carol (James) Coleman of Shrewsbury, MA; grandchildren, Jeffrey (Kristen) Zyskowski of Maple Grove, MN, Christy (Kevin) Schmidt of Antigo, WI, Lisa Zyskowski of Antigo, WI, Julie (Jon) Conner of Mankato, MN, James Coleman Jr. of Shrewsbury, MA, and Debra Mildenberger of Tomahawk, WI, great-grandchildren, Ryan and Katie Zyskowski, Cody and Jacob Schmidt, Brandon and Tyler Wild, Alysson Schaal and Zachary Mildenberger;. a sister, Victoria (John) Savich of Mt. Home, AK; two brothers, Walter (Delphine)Zyskowski of Apple Valley, CA and Thomas (Katherine) Zyskowski of Iron River, MI; nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandchildren, Bryan Zyskowski, John and Rhonda Coleman, four brothers, Anton, Joseph, Edmund and Sylvester and five sisters, infant, Delores, Mary Rae, Frances Angeloff, Anne Plogman and Gertrude Fox.
