Leona A. Schalow, age 75 of rural Mankato died Thursday, April 14, 2005 at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester.

Funeral service 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Evangelical Free Church of Mankato, with Rev. Peter Vander Hook officiating. Interment in St. Johns Ev. Lutheran Cemetery, St. Clair. Visitation on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at Mankato Mortuary and one hour before services at church on Wednesday.

Leona was born November 5, 1929 in North Mankato to Carl and Adeline (Weirauch) Buhr. She graduated form Mankato High School in 1947 and later from Mankato State College. She also graduated from Minneapolis School of Art Walker Art Center and Western Colorado Center for the Arts. She was united in marriage to Duane Schalow on December 23, 1956 in St. Clair, he died Sept. 21, 1975. Leona was a Sunday school teacher, organist, choir member and painter/artist. She belonged to Mankato Art Group and Minnesota Rural Artists Association; taught childrens art classes at Carnegie Art Center, 4-H and Western Colorado Center for the Arts in Grand Junction, CO. She has arts work in collections nation-wide. Leona developed safety programs and designed a Safety Decal, while she was Womens Chair of the Blue Earth Co. Farm Bureau, which she donated to the Minnesota State Farm Bureau and achieved international distribution. Was a member of the Republican Party and a delegate to state conventions. Other memberships include, P.T.A., So. Minnesota Poetry Assn, Mankato Bird Club, Gain-A-Bit Extension Group. Leona was employed as advertising manager at Bretts Dept. Store and later was an artist/designer- compositor at Direct Mail Service. She loved animals and enjoyed exhibiting art and photography at county and state fairs, music and writing.

Leona is survived by her five children, Julie Schalow of San Diego, CA, Georgia Sands of Mankato, Charles Schalow and wife, Kathy of Wilmont, MN, Sharon Tanley and husband, Darren of Garden City, Leonard Schalow and wife, Erin of Lochbuie, CO; nine grandchildren; a brother, Carl Buhr and wife, Connie of rural Mankato; a sister, Bonnie AAsum and husband, Tom of Albany, OR; nephews, nieces and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
