Julio Peter Gasteiro, age 82, of North Mankato, died from cancer, Friday, February 25, 2005 at Immanuel-St. Josephs Hospital in Mankato.

A celebration of Julios life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Centenary United Methodist Church in Mankato with Rev. Pam Serdar and Rev. Dean Wolf officiating. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service at the church on Monday. Memorials are preferred to the Centenary United Methodist Church Building Fund or the Mankato Summit Center. Mankato Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Julio was born October 23, 1922, in Brooklyn, NY. He was the one of two children born to Julio and Monica (Rodriguez) Gasteiro, who had been born in Spain and moved, met and married in Brooklyn, NY.

Julio served from 1941-1946 in the US Army and was stationed in Okinawa and Korea. In March of 1945 he married June Katherine Bidwell in Rutherford, NJ. They had one daughter, Juliet, who was born in 1948. Julio graduated in 1949 from City College of New York with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He played Lacrosse in college and was a member of the Club Cervantes. He was also president of the Spanish, Pan American, and Dramatic Clubs.

Julio was first employed with Lafayette Radio, as a salesman and later worked with Picker International doing export sales of medical x-ray equipment. Before retiring in December of 1992, he worked for Philips Electronics for the Research and Development Division, selling x-ray analytical instrumentation and electron microscopes.

Julio and June moved to Stamford, CT, where June died in November, 1996. In 1999, he moved to Mankato, where he married Doris Harvey on February 13. They made their home in North Mankato.

Julio was active at Centenary United Methodist Church, enjoyed singing with the Summit Center Singers, and working out at the YMCA. He was a member of the American Legion and Photography Club of Stamford, CT.

Julio is survived by his wife, Doris Gasteiro of North Mankato; daughter, Juliet (Dane) Piper of Viroqua, WI; two grandchildren, Dana Piper of Menomonie, WI, Ross Piper of Minneapolis, MN; three step-sons, Drew (Vicki) VanKrevelen of St. Anthony, MN, Scott (Nicole) VanKrevelen of Palm Coast, FL, Mark (Mary Roiger) VanKrevelen of St. Paul, MN; four step-grandchildren, Jenna, Austin, Jacob, and Ryne. Julio was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.
