William "Bill" Oscar Wendlandt, passed away on September 13, 2013.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 19, 2013 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Vernon Center. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., with a 3:45 p.m. prayer service Wednesday at Northview " North Mankato Mortuary, 2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato. Visitation will continue one hour before service at the church on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Prolife Across America.
Bill, the son of Oscar and Morell (Smith) Wendlandt, was born on October 4, 1931 in Northfield, Minnesota. His family moved to Vernon Center, MN in 1934. He attended Garden City High School and graduated with the class of 1949.
Bill served as a First Lieutenant in the Army. He then completed two years of college at St. John's University before being called back to work the family farm.
On September 8, 1956 Bill and Patricia "Patty" Praught were married at St. Albert's Church in Albertville. They celebrated 57 years of marriage and were blessed with 8 children and 17 grandchildren. They farmed and raised their family in Garden City.
Bill was active in associations that promoted farming. He was a co-founding member and later served as the President of the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association. He also served on the American Soybean Association Board of Directors.
In his younger years, Bill enjoyed many sports. He enjoyed traveling, was a voracious reader and an avid hunter and fisherman.
Bill was a long time member of St. Matthew's Parrish. He was also member of the Lake Crystal American Legion. A winter Texan, he and Patty took advantage of an extra season of fishing and enjoyed card playing and weekly gatherings at their condominium in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Bill is survived by his wife, Patty; his children, Tim (Barb) Wendlandt of Garden City, Bill Wendlandt of Minneapolis, David (Kay) Wendlandt of Colorado Springs, CO, Jerry Wendlandt of Alexandria, Marie (Rob) Kruegel of Edina, Susan Wilde of Mapleton, Karen Wendlandt of Minneapolis, and Laura (Austin) Seal of San Antonio, TX; his 17 grandchildren; his brother, Tony (Ivalea) Wendlandt of Vernon Center and his sister, Mary Applen of North Mankato; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Helen and Kathleen.
