Maynard L. Helberg, age 95, of Mankato, died Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at the Mankato Lutheran Home. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. on Friday at Centenary United Methodist Church in Mankato, with Rev. Dean Wolf officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Mankato. Memorials are preferred to the Mankato Lutheran Home or to an organization of the donors choice.Manakto Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
Maynard was born on May 11, 1909 in Rutland, N.D. He was the son of Theodore and Christine (Bostrom) Helberg. He attended Benson High School and Macalester College. Maynard served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was united in marriage to Doris Plank on August 12, 1933 in Pipestone. She died in March of 1975. Maynard later married Opal Manecke on February 11, 1978 in Mankato. He worked in sales as a heavy hardware wholesaler for Nichols, Dean, and Greg Company for many years. Maynard was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Mankato.He was a member of the Mankato Golf Club and Mankato Elks.
Maynard is survived by his wife, Opal Helberg of Mankato; one son and his wife, David and Mary Helberg of Hayfield; four step-children and their spouses, John and Suzanne Manecke of St. Paul, Deborah and Lee Natvig of Greenwood, S.C., Kristin and Gary Johnson of New Brighton, James and Lori Manecke of Shoreview; four grandchildren and their spouses, Jon and Terese Helberg of Prescott, WI, Jane and Charlie Jondal of Prior Lake, Paul and Coleen Helberg of Prior Lake, Peter Helberg of Chicago, IL; ten step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Joyce Murray of Cedar Rapids, IA, Millie Dale of Benson, Harriet Kierski of Ft. Dodge, IA; also many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Maynard was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris and one sister, Elva.
