Harley W. Smith, age 76 of Lake Crystal died early Sunday morning, January 9, 2005 at the Lake Crystal Health Care Center in Lake Crystal.
Funeral services 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church, Vernon Center, with Rev. Wanda Kothlow officiating. Burial in Lake Crystal Cemetery. Visitation on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the Lake Crystal Mortuary and one hour before services at church on Wednesday.
Harley was born October 18, 1928 in Huron, SD to Emery G. and Laura (Meyer) Smith. He graduated from Rapidan High School in Rapidan, MN. He was united in marriage to Beverly A. Ericksen on April 15, 1949 in Rapidan; she died December 8, 1990. Harley farmed from 1955 to l990 and also had Smiths Strawberries from 1971 to 1988. He worked for Rapidan Elevator, G.T.A. Elevator, custodian at Wellcome Memorial High School, and for 18 years at Crystal Co-op. He served on the Garden City township board. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Harley is survived by six children, Peggy (Bob) Kelley of North Mankato, Laura (Scott) Jameson of Vernon Center, Dan (Karen) Smith of rural Lake Crystal, Tim (Melanie) Smith of Lake Crystal, Tracy (Gary) Idler of Zumbrota, Troy (Charla) Smith of rural Lake Crystal; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Hovey of Bremerton, WA; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn (David) Yordy of Dekalb, IL; brother-in-law, William Lightcap of Lake Crystal; two sisters-in-law, Bonita (Melvin) Bartsch of rural Good Thunder, Bernadine Smith of Lewiston, TX; also nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, Scott in 1977, a brother and two sisters.
