Dick was born to Richard Albert and Lydia Marie (Saari) McMullen on May 28, 1940 in Moorehead, Minnesota. From early childhood, and as the son of a store manager, Dick loved helping his dad by cleaning out birdcages and tidying up merchandise in the Ben Franklin stores of Red Wing and Pipestone. In 1958 he graduated from Pipestone High School and went to Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
He launched a career as an Administrative Officer with the National Park Service in Pipestone, Minnesota. He had subsequent assignments at Colorado National Monument in Fruita, Colorado (1965), Dinosaur National Monument, near Vernal, Utah (1966), Great Smokey Mountain National Park in Cherokee, North Carolina (1968), and Grand Teton National Park near Jackson, Wyoming (1970-1995). He retired after a 36-year career and moved to Cleveland, Minnesota.
He relished his retirement by indulging in all his favorite hobbies: Building and flying model airplanes, doing carpentry projects, and most important of all, having time for fishing. During the last four years of his life, he developed a new hobby of enjoying his dialysis by making it his mission to rib, cajole, and tease the incredible dialysis crew at the ISJ Hospital with his dry humor and wit.
Richard is survived by his wife: Anne Petersen-McMullen of Cleveland; children and their spouses: Jeff and Ann (Pentroni) McMullen of Sandy, UT and children, Renzo and Natalie; Julie and (Scott) McMullen-Humphrey of Jackson, WY and children, Jake, Heather, Emily, and Clay; Rick and Nicole (Taylor) McMullen of Jackson, WY and children, Amanda, Jamee, Sam, and Cooper; Christine and Lance McMullen-Windey of Jackson, WY and children, Lauren and Dominic; and Nicholas McMullen of Mankato; one sister: Virginia "Ginny" McMullen of St. Peter.
