Charles A. Herbst, age 81 of Lake Crystal died Monday, November 8, 2004 at his home.
Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Lake Crystal with Rev. Kay Brandt officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Lake Crystal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Lake Crystal Mortuary and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Charles A. Herbst was born September, 13, 1923 to Fred and Nellie (Roth) Herbst in rural Lake Crystal. He was united in marriage to Jean Sutherland on January 30, 1946 at First United Methodist Church in Lake Crystal. Charles served his country in the US Army during World War II in the 163 Inf., 41st Division in the Pacific Theatre. He was actively engaged in farming until 1979 when he semi retired. Charles was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church serving on many committees, John Roth Post #294 American Legion, Bethel Lodge #103, and the Crystal/Loon Lake Associations. He enjoyed gardening, fast pitch softball games, woodworking, traveling, camping and his grandchildren. Charles was a willing participant for many research studies through the VA.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Herbst of Lake Crystal; four children, Marlene (Jack) Baker of Rosemount, Barbara (Ernie) Neilsen of Mankato, Betty Lou (Jim) Peterson of Lake Crystal, John (Gwen) Herbst of Lake Crystal; eight grandchildren, Marcus and Jeff Baker, Michael and Kimberly Neilsen, Matthew (Holly) and John Paul Peterson, Tony and Laura Herbst; brother, Clarence Red (Dolly) Herbst of Lake Crystal; two step-sisters, Marion (Bob) Williams and Esther Moritz all of Mankato; sister-in-law, Verna Williams of Mankato; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceded in death by parents, two step-sisters, and a step-brother.
