A lifelong resident of Minnesota, Mrs. Arnold Meyer, nee Ruth Bernice Gibbs, B , age 90, died October 9, 2004 at Mankato Lutheran Home in Mankato, MN.
The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 16, 2004 at our Saviors Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. Eugene Glade officiating. A private family burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Bernice Gibbs was born in Mankato on September 20, 1914 to Almeda (McCall) Gibbs and Gilbert Bert Gibbs. She was the third of five children.
As a young woman, B was actively involved in modeling, musical performances, theatre and beauty pageant competitions. She acted in theatrical presentations at Mankato Teachers College and in community theatre. She was elected Miss Fashion Queen of Mankato in 1932.
B married F. Arnold Arnie Meyer on August 20, 1934 in Estherville, Iowa. They were blessed with five children, Frederick Fritz , Pierre Pete , Denis, Pamala and Janet.
B was a member of the group which organized Our Saviors Lutheran Church. She was active in the church choir, as a vocalist for weddings and funerals, and in the Womens Guild. She sang for many community functions, was interested in traveling, knitting, curling, playing cards, and gathering information about her genealogy. She treasured music and loved playing the organ. She most enjoyed being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
B is survived by son Pierre Meyer and his wife Sharon of Sarasota, Florida, daughter Pamala Struessel of Columbia, Missouri, daughter Janet Wichmann of Reno, Nevada, and daughter-in-law Sandra Ellerbrock Meyer of Mankato, 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, as well as many beloved relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, F. Arnold Meyer; two sons, Fritz and Denis, both of Mankato; a son-in-law, Kenneth Struessel of Columbia, MO; 2 brothers, Fred Gibbs of Sun City, AZ and Dr. Robert Gibbs of Minneapolis, MN; 2 sisters, Mrs. Naida Lyons of Alameda, CA and Mrs. Betty Rogers of San Diego, CA.
