Morgan H. Brandrup, age 71, of Mankato, died Sunday, September 26, 2004 at the Mankato House Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 1, 2004 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. Mary Iverson officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation will be held from 4 " 7 p.m. on Thursday at Mankato Mortuary and continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Memorials may be given to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or to an organization of the donors choice.
Morgan was born on July 29, 1933 in Mankato to Holley and Lucile (Ross) Brandrup. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1951. Morgan attended Mankato State Teachers College for a short time before enlisting in the United States Navy. He served four years in active duty before being honorably discharged on March 31, 1956. Morgan attended Macalester College in St. Paul and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism, geography and history in 1960. He was employed at the Marshall Messenger as sports editor and news editor from March of 1960 to January of 1965. Morgan then became sports editor of the Mankato Free Press, and held that position until June of 1991 when he became the newspapers sports columnist. He retired in July of 1996. He was selected to become a member of the Minnesota Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1991 and later became a member of the Minnesota State University, Mankato, Athletics Hall of Distinction in October of 1999.
Morgan married Marie Nickeson on August 5, 1972 at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where he was a confirmation mentor and served on several church boards. Morgan was also a member of Minnesota Associated Press Editors Association, the Mankato Elks Club # 825, and the Summit Center. He enjoyed playing bingo, reading, especially the daily sports page and was an avid sports fan.
Morgan is survived by his wife, Marie of Mankato; brother, John (Nancy) Brandrup of Rochester; sister-in-law, Evelyn (Elmer) Gilbertson of Columbus, OH; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents.
