Mary Louise Ireland, age 80 died Friday, September 24, 2004 at the Mankato Lutheran Home in Mankato.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church in St. Clair with Father Karl Voelker, S.J. officiating. Visitation 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Mankato Mortuary with a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service led by Father Syl Brown. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Burial will be at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in St. Clair. If so desired, memorials may be given to the Mankato Lutheran Home or School Sisters of Notre Dame.
Mary Ireland was born in Minneapolis on October 2, 1923 to Arthur and Maria (Crahen) Hunziker. The family later moved to Mankato. She graduated from Loyola High School. Prior to her marriage, Mary worked as a sales clerk for Stan A. Smith Jewelers and worked and modeled for Pierces Dress Shop. She married Ralph J. Ireland in Mankato on September 8, 1951 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. They lived on a farm south of Mankato, where they raised their five children. After her marriage, her main job was to keep track of her five children and her husband, who loves to hunt, fish and fly.
In 1970, Mary was instrumental in starting the River of Life ecumenical prayer group in Mankato. She also traveled with her husband and Sister Frances Clair SSND, to Europe as an Evangelist with Full Gospel Business Mens Fellowship International. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Clair, the River of Life Prayer Community, and her beloved chicken club .
She enjoyed shopping, stamping greeting cards, spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren, knitting, bird watching and baking her famous rolls.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph Ireland; three sons and their wives, Dan and Marie Ireland, Tim and Connie Ireland, Frank and Abby Ireland, a daughter Sarah, and her husband, Jim Boxrud; son-in-law, Loren Wiebold all of the Mankato area; seventeen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack Hunziker of Mankato; sisters-in-law, Arlene Mike Hunziker of Rochester, Doreen Hunziker of Mankato; brother-in-law, Lawrence Ireland and his wife, Patricia of rural Mankato; many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, William, Eugene, and James; and a daughter, Mary Margaret Wiebold.
