John M Whitney

John M. Whitney, age 76, of Good Thunder, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, at St. John Lutheran Church, Good Thunder, the Rev. Rudolph Maurer, Jr., officiating. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 4-7 p.m. at Mankato Mortuary and one hour before the service at the church on Sunday. Memorials may be given to Lutheran Hour Ministries.

John was born in Mankato on July 10, 1928, to Marvin C. And Irma F. (Possin) Whitney, was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Good Thunder. He grew up near Amboy , graduating from Amboy High School in 1946. He attended the MN School of Agriculture in St. Paul. John was united in marriage to Edyth E. Johnson on Sept. 3, 1949, at Zion Lutheran Church in Lake Crystal. They farmed near Madelia until 1958 when they moved to Kenyon, and farmed there until1993 when they retired and moved to Good Thunder. John also worked for Owatonna Manufacturing Company for 21 years.

John's interests included 4-H, sports, and music. He was a member of Lakelanders Barbershop Chorus in Faribault. He was active in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and was a choir member at Trinity Lutheran Church of Lake Crystal, Trinity Lutheran Church of Medford and St. John Lutheran Church of Good Thunder. John also was interested in LCMS history and current operations of the MN South District, St. John Lutheran Church history, Christian outreach, and was a long time member of MN LLL (Lutheran Hour Ministries).

He is survived by his wife, Edyth Whitney; seven children: Kent (Sandie) Whitney of Grayson, GA; Elliot Whitney and fiancé Lois Brown of Blackduck; Jinette Whitney of Good Thunder; Bryan (Robin) Whitney of Kenyon; Carolyn (Leland) Jones of Eagle River, AK; Laura (Mark) Matzke of Good Thunder; Leah (Steven) Galaudet of Minneapolis; Toni Whitney of Bemidji; 16 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Duane, in 1947.
