J. Scott Sanders, M.D., age 59, died Friday morning, May 12, 2006 at his Mankato home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Memorial service will be 12 noon on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mankato with Rev. Richard Colletti officiating. Following the service, everyone is invited to the Midwest Wireless Banquet Hall for a reception and a time to visit with the family. There will be visitation from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Mankato Mortuary.

Scott was born July 17, 1946 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of John H. and Nancy (Gayler) Sanders. Scott graduated in 1964 from Kirkwood High School in St. Louis, MO. In 1968 he graduated with a BS degree in Chemistry from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, where he lettered in track as a pole vaulter. While at Tulane, Scott studied at University College at the University of London during his junior year. Scott attended the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia, MO. He completed his internship, residency, and fellowship at the University of Minnesota, specializing in internal medicine and pulmonary medicine.

Scott was united in marriage to Barbara Odile Santoyo on September 4, 1971 in St. Louis, MO. For most of their married life, they made their home in Mankato and were blessed with two children, Lara and Michael.

Scott was employed at the Mankato Clinic from 1979-2005, practicing 26 years as a Board Certified Pulmonologist and Critical Care Specialist. His practice also included Sleep Medicine. Scott served as Past Medical Director in the Respiratory Care Department and Sleep Lab at ISJ/Mayo. He was also a Past President of the Minnesota Thoracic Society and served on the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Lung Association. Scott was a member of the American Thoracic Society and the Minnesota Medical Association. He also served as Past President of the Mankato Senior Hockey League.

Scotts family includes his wife, Barbara O. Sanders of Mankato; two children, Lara Beth Sanders of Lakewood, CO, Michael Scott Sanders of Mankato; four siblings, John H. Sanders and wife, Olga of Lafayette, IN, Tom Sanders and wife, Ann of Fort Collins, CO, Jan Sanders Stitt and husband, Paul of Fairbanks, AK, Gary Huxel and wife, Donna of Terre Haute, IN; mother-in-law, Sally Santoyo of Washington, MO, brothers-in-law, Jerry (Eva) Santoyo of Columbia, MO, Don (Debra) Santoyo of Arnold, MO, Dave (Sherrie) Santoyo of Bethany, OK, Steve Santoyo of Columbia, MO; sisters-in-law, Karla Santoyo of Columbia MO, Mary (Larry) VonBehren of New Haven, MO, Diane (Bill) Allebach of Ste. Genevieve, MO and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Scott was preceded in death by his father, John H. Sanders; mother, Nancy (Gayler) Sanders Huxel; a second father, William Huxel; and his father-in-law, Charles Santoyo.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to an organization of the donors choice, Mankato Salvation Army, or to the Tulane University Rebuilding Fund, c/o Tulane University, Office of Development, 3439 Prytania, Suite 200, New Orleans, LA 70115.
