Elmer A. Herbst, age 96, of Mankato and formerly of Judson, died Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato.
Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Mankato, with Rev. Paul Nolting, officiating. Burial will be in Pilgrims Rest Cemetery, Mankato. Visitation will be one hour before service at church on Thursday. Mankato Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
Elmer was born January 21, 1910 to Henry and Dorothy (Laube) Herbst in Judson Township, Blue Earth County. He was united in marriage to Viola G. Madsen in 1933 at Butternut Valley Lutheran Church. Elmer was employed with National Poly for four years as a custodian, hauled milk for 14 years, and with BENCO for 18 years as a custodian. He was a former member of Faith Lutheran Church, Nicollet until it closed and then became a member of Immanuel Lutheran in Mankato. Elmer enjoyed old time music, taking short trips, and animals, especially horses and dogs.
Elmer is survived by nieces and nephews, Elaine (Willard) Hellekson of Judson, Clarence (Elaine) Herbst of Lake Crystal, Mildred Kvam, Gordon Herbst both of Mankato; and one cousin.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola in 1995; siblings, Henry Herbst, Harriet Herbst Westman, Marie Herbst Gustafson, Fred Herbst, Paul Herbst, Caroline Kvam, Millie, Ida, and Grace Herbst; nephews, Charles Herbst, Hayden Kvam.
