William F. Bill Pestka, age 69, of Mankato died Friday, September 3, 2004 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Mankato, with Father Neal Wilkinson officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-8 p.m. at Mankato Mortuary, with a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continues one hour before services at church on Tuesday.
Bill was born on September 29, 1934 in Mankato. He was the son of Arthur and Bonnie (Murphy) Pestka. Bill lived in the St. Clair area until the age of 5, when his family moved to Mankato. He attended District 77 Public School and graduated from Mankato High School in 1952. Bill was united in marriage to Shirley Goettl on November 23, 1955 in Mankato. Over the years, Bill worked several jobs as a mechanic, and then was employed with Judd Brown Construction Company for five years and Kato Engineering for ten years. In 1973 he worked for Electrolux, and in 1984 worked for SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in maintenance. Bill retired in 1994 due to health reasons, and underwent a heart transplant in 1995. The transplanted heart gave him new life again. Bill was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, and enjoyed being outdoors, doing for other people whether it was for family or friends, playing cards, and spending time at his summer home on Duck Lake. He was a recovering alcoholic of 39 years.
Bill is survived by his wife, Shirley of Mankato; three sons and their wives, John and Deborah of Maple Grove, Steven and Judi of Londonderry, NH, James and Jana of Good Thunder; one daughter and her husband, Kathleen and John Gronewold of North Mankato; 11 grandchildren, Ashley and Will Pestka, Bonnie, Christina, Danielle, and Stephanie Pestka, Chet Anderson, Amber and Erin Gronewold, Courtney and Heather Pestka; four sisters-in-law, Peg Pestka, Delores Reuter, Barbara Slimmer and her husband, John, and Jeanette Goettl; three brothers-in-law and their wives, Cyril and Lorraine Goettl, Lawrence and Betty Goettl, Frank and Kathy Goettl; also many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Eugene; one sister, Virginia; two brothers-in-law, Karl Reuter and Harold Goettl.
