Dan was born April 21, 1946 to Gordon J. and Emma (Fuhrer) Hoffman, both residents of Ashley, ND. He graduated from Ashley High School in 1963. After graduating from Ashley High School, Dan attended the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks. During the Vietnam War, Dan enlisted in the Army and served in Military Intelligence. He was assigned to Albuquerque, NM, where he met Mallory Mares. They were married on August 16, 1971 in Waubay, SD. They returned to Grand Forks, and Dan completed his degree in accounting. Dan and Mallory moved to Denver, CO, where Dan worked for the Defense Contract Audit Agency. It was in Denver that Dan was hired by the FBI as a special agent. Upon completion of training at Quantico, VA, Dan was assigned to Omaha, NE. Later, he was assigned to a resident agency in Des Moines, IA. Dan worked for 18 months in Iowa before being assigned to the Chicago office of the FBI. The family lived in Carol Stream, IL, for the next 10 years. Dan, as a 12-year veteran of the FBI, was assigned to open the resident agency in Mankato, MN, where Dan completed his career of service in the FBI. Dan spent the last four years of his career as a polygraph examiner for the FBI. His travels took him to all the neighboring states. Dans reputation as a polygrapher spread quickly throughout the Bureau. He was known as an agent who could obtain a confession, in most cases, saving other agents a great deal of time and work.

After 26 1/2 years of service, Special Agent Daniel J. Hoffman retired on January 3, 2003. Dan left the office in Mankato, MN, with a smile on his face and many memories of his career, where he served under every director of the Bureau except for J. Edgar Hoover. A colleague recently commented that during his career with the Bureau, Dan established a reputation as an outstanding investigator. He set a standard of excellence that should serve as an example to all future Mankato agents. His liaison work with local and state law enforcement officials helped to establish many professional and personal relationships in the area.

He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fantasy football, spending time with his friends and family, and was a die hard Vikings fan. He also loved fishing and often stated, that in his retirement, I dont want my fishing pole to dry out much.

He is survived by his wife, Mallory; two children, Jenny Hoffman of St. Paul, Nick Hoffman of Chicago, IL; two brothers Greg (Sue) Hoffman of Corcoran, MN, Mike Hoffman and special friend, Paulette Thurn of Bismark, ND; a sister, Jan (Gary) Feil of Ft. Collins, CO; nephews, nieces, and cousins. Preceded in death by his parents, and mother-in-law, Grayce Mares.
