Hayden R. Smithy Smith, age 92 of Mobridge, SD formerly of North Mankato died, July 17, 2004 in Mobridge.
Memorial service 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 2, 2004 at St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Mankato, with Rev. Gary Wong officiating. Interment in Prairie Hill Cemetery, Fulda, MN. Memorial may be given to the organ fund at St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Mankato. Mankato Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
Hayden was born July 2, 1912 in Clarasholm, Alberta, Canada to George and Geraldine (Kunst) Smith. The family left Canada in 1920. He attended school at Winnebago, MN, and later graduated from Dunwoody Institute, Minneapolis with a certificate in cake decorating and candy making. He was united in marriage to Marjorie L. Mitchell on August 26, 1934 in Fairmont and then moved to Mankato. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946 as a cook. He worked for many area bakeries and then at Madsens for over 25 years. He decorated wedding cakes for hundreds of area couples. He was a member of St. Pauls Ev. Lutheran Church, American Legion Post #11, DAV #10 and the Sunrise Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed woodworking.
Mr. Smith is survived by two children and their spouses, Delores (Bill) Rice of Mobridge, SD, Kent (Kathy) Smith of Yoncalla, OR; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie in June of 2004, a grandson, a brother, and half-sister.
