John Matthew Stenger Jr., age 88, of North Mankato, died Sunday, October 14, 2012, at Pathstone Living in Mankato.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 18, 2012, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Mankato, with Rev. John Wilmot officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at Northview " North Mankato Mortuary, 2060 Commerce Drive, with a 6:30 p.m. Prayer Service. Visitation continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Memorials may be given to St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church.
John was born on May 16, 1924, in Pittsburgh, PA. He was the son of John and Mary (Rice) Stenger Sr. John attended school in Pittsburgh. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1943 to 1945. John was a Sergeant in the 8th Armored Division, served under Gen. Patton, in the Battle of the Bulge, and was awarded the Bronze and Silver Stars. He was united in a 64 year marriage to Elizabeth Shields on September 6, 1948, in Pittsburgh.
John was employed for 15 years with Fisher Scientific in Pittsburgh. He and his family moved to the Mankato area in 1968. He worked for National Poly Products from 1967 until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, participated in the church's Men's Club, and also the Mankato American Legion Post 11. John enjoyed traveling across the U.S. in their motor home, bowling, music, and dancing.
John is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of Mankato; six children, Janet (Harry) Moore, Joseph (Louanne) Stenger, David (Deborah) Stenger Sr., Mary Anne (Joseph) Romeo, Paul Stenger, and Jerry (Jeanine) Stenger; nine grandchildren, Michael Hansen, Thomas Hansen, David (Jennifer) Stenger Jr., Kimberly (Brian) Krueger, Matt (Lindsay) Stenger, Jennifer (Tim) Spellacy, Kevin DeGroote Jr., Jovanna Romeo, and Landon Stenger; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jane (Bill) Sorocco and Mary Agnes (Richard) Powers; brother-in-law, Russell Abernathy; also nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Genevieve Abernathy; and brother, William Stenger.
