Stafford Walter Thomas, age 74, of Mankato, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Immanuel-St. Josephs Hospital in Mankato.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dawn Carder officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Memorials are preferred to First Presbyterian Church or the Shriners Childrens Hospital.
Stafford was born June 15, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to Dr. Edward William and Lora Ann (Stanke) Thomas. He graduated in 1948 from West Aurora High School in Aurora, Illinois. During the 1950s, Stafford served stateside in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged as a Corporal. He received his Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering on June 6, 1957 from the Illinois Institute of Technology. On September 12, 1959, he was united in marriage to Deanna Bowers at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They were married for 38 years and were divorced in 1997.
Stafford was employed at Infilco, from 1957-59, in sales and the startup of water treatment plants. From 1959-61, he was the Water Superintendent for the City of Storm Lake, Iowa and from 1961-65, he was the Associate City Engineer for the City of Mankato. Stafford was employed from April 1965 at RCM Engineering of Gaylord as a professional Civil Engineer and consultant, until his retirement in October 1991.
Stafford was a member of the Eagles Club, Moose Lodge, and a past commander of American Legion Post 11 all of Mankato. He was a 40 year member of the Masonic Lodge AF & AM of Mankato. He belonged to the Scottish Rite, Osman Shriners of Minnesota, and the Mankato Thunderbirds. He enjoyed growing roses, Civil War history, politics, parading with the T-Birds, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include three children, Denise Thomas of North Mankato, Bruce (Terri) Thomas of Rochester, Charles (Jane) Thomas of Mankato; six grandchildren, Kaitlin Thomas, Brittany and Nicholas Thomas, Danielle, Andrea and Morgan Thomas; sister, Carol (Peter) Poltersdorf of Aurora, IL; three nephews, one niece, and two cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
