Merlin O. "Mac" McArthur, 86, of Mankato died Tuesday, June 29, at Oaklawn Healthcare Center.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. Paul Meierding officiating. Burial in Woodland Hills Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Mankato Mortuary and one hour before service at the church on Friday.

Mac was born September 30, 1917 at Lamberton, MN, to Frank and Gertrude (Koenig) McArthur. The family lived in Lamberton, LeCenter, and Mapleton where his parents opened cafes. He graduated from Mapleton High School in 1935 where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He attended Mankato Commercial College in 1936, worked on the Alaskan Highway, and served in WWII with the occupational forces in Germany.

Mac married Delores Rose Dranttel of St. Peter, MN, on October 6, 1940, in rural Gaylord, MN. They made their home in N. Mankato until 1965 when they moved to Mankato. He was a department manager at Sears, Mankato, for 36 years. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he ushered, American Legion Post 11, VFW Post 950, and the Kiwanis Club. He loved seeing his grandchildren and great grandchildren, go fishing at area lakes, winter and summer, watch the MN Twins, play golf, and play cards. He and Delores enjoyed attending numerous Mankato West and East sporting events and also MN State sporting events.

Mac is survived by two sons, Jim (Marlene) of Lake Shore, MN and Tom (Kathy) of Lake Washington. Grandchildren, Jeff (Janet) McArthur of Victoria, MN, Robin (Dave) Anderson of Bloomington, MN, Amy (John) Knutson of Minneapolis, and Christopher McArthur of Minneapolis. Step Grandchildren, Piper (Kevin) Gills of Traverse City, MI, Kevin Knodel of Prior Lake, and Jessa Jeremiah of Minneapolis. Great Grandchildren, Nicholas Knutson, Jenna McArthur, and Caroline Anderson. Step Great Grandchildren, Jerod and Michael Gills. Sisters-in-law, Hyllis McArthur of Fond du Lac, WI, Irene Dranttel of St. Peter, Carole Berggren of Denver, CO, Margaret Ann Hackley of Tacoma, WA, and Juanita Dranttel of Mankato. Brothers-in-law, Eben Davis of Yelm, WA, and Robert Hackley of Tacoma, WA. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores, in 2002, infant daughter, Gail, his parents, brothers, Robert and Don, and sister, June Anderson.
