Wilmer Henry Forrey, age 83, of Mankato, died Monday, August 27, 2012 at Methodist Hospital, Rochester.
Funeral Service will be held at 8:30 a.m., Friday, August 31, 2012 at Mankato Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Thursday at Mankato Mortuary. Burial will be at 11:05 a.m., Friday in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
Wilmer was born May 3, 1929 to Henry Wilmer and Elsie Bertha (Mann Rehbein) Forrey in Garden City. He attended Garden City High School. He was united in marriage to Muriel Sanders on July 2, 1947 in Blue Earth, MN. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1946, then served as a U.S. Marine until retiring as a Lt. Col. in 1973, a total of 27 years of military service to his country. He served both in the Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam. During his military years he graduated from Mankato State Teachers College and the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School. He returned to Mankato State University and earned his master's and specialist's degree. He was the principal at Wellcome Memorial High School, Garden City and later became superintendent. He continued to serve other school districts, where he attempted to retire several times but was always drawn back to additional school districts. He was a member of John Roth American Legion Post 294 and an Eagle Scout. Even in his last days, he said his wife, Muriel was the love of his life.
Will is survived by his wife of 65 years, Muriel of Mankato; five children, Brenda Forrey of Savage, Steve (Cindy) Forrey of Hastings, Doug (Lita) Forrey of Apple Valley, Sandra (Sam) Colling of Jordan, Mike (Laura) Forrey of Carver; twelve grandchildren, Graham Joachim, Shanon Fair, Allison (KC) Murphy, David and Daniel Forrey, Kris, Sara, and Tami Forrey, Rhianon, Rebecca, and Matthew Colling, Jonathan Forrey; six great-grandchildren, Jack, Tabitha, and Violet Forrey, Kyle, Andrew, and Emmalee Murphy; brother, David Forrey of North Mankato; and many extended family members.
Will was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Allen.
