Roger Stokes, age 84, of Lake Crystal, died on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at the New Ulm Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cambria Presbyterian Church with Rev. Penny Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-8 p.m. at North Mankato Mortuary-NORTHVIEW and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Cambria Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Cambria Presbyterian Church, ECHO food shelf, or the donor's choice.
Roger was born on September 9, 1926 in Madelia to Edmond and Agnes (Stephens) Stokes. He graduated from Madelia High School in 1944. He served in the United States Navy and was stationed in San Diego before being honorably discharged in 1946. In October 1952, Roger was united in marriage to Melva Hughes. He farmed in Butternut Township from 1953-1993. After retirement, Roger worked in the spring and fall at the Crystal Co-op. Roger was a member of the Cambria American Legion and the Madelia VFW. He attended the Cambria Presbyterian Church. He was a supervisor of the Butternut Township Board for many years, on the board of the Crystal Co-op, and was a member of the Cambria Cemetery Association. Roger was a sports fan and enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. He never missed any of his children's or grandchildren's events. He was a 4-H leader and softball coach when his children were younger. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed playing cards and having coffee with the guys at the Preri Bach in Cambria.
He is survived by his wife Melva of Lake Crystal; son, Tim and special friend Lori Williams of Madelia; daughter, Julie and special friend Rod Morton of Minnetonka; grandchildren, Erica (Mike) Finnegan of Lakeland and Nicholas (Sarah) Stokes of Woodbury; great-granddaughter, Ella Matilda Finnegan of Lakeland; brother, Bill (Alice) of Lake Crystal; sister-in-law, Carol Stokes of Stoughton, WI; brothers-in-law, Curt Yerkes of Madelia and Charlie Merritt of Austin, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John (Evelyn) and Tom Stokes; sisters, Elizabeth Merritt and Margaret Yerkes.
