Bonita "Bonnie" Wirig, age 97, of Mankato, died Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Oaklawn Health Care Center, Mankato.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 10, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Mankato. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Mankato. Visitation will be one hour before service at church. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are preferred to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Calvary Cemetery, or School Sisters of Notre Dame.
Bonnie was born August 26, 1913 to John R. and Ida M. (Guentzel) Jones in Mankato. She was an only child. She graduated from Good Counsel Academy. Bonnie was united in marriage to Robert H. Wirig on January 19, 1931 in St. Paul. Together they had two daughters. She was a loving and devoted wife until Bob passed away in 1983. Bonnie's children and grandchildren were a special love of her life.
Bonnie's lifelong interests were many. She was especially gifted in singing and art. Each of her family has one of her beautiful oil paintings. She worked in retail business for a period of time, and also served as an election judge over the years as she was an enthusiastic follower of politics. Together Bob and Bonnie were lovers of fishing. Bonnie really enjoyed cooking and decorating, and was an avid gardener. She could frequently be found working in her flower gardens early in the mornings. She belonged to the Mankato Garden Exchange Club for over forty years. Also to the Trivia Card Club she so enjoyed. Bonnie never failed to stay active and fully enjoy life. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church for over fifty years.
Bonnie is survived by her two daughters, Dixie (Fred) Muellerleile and Shari Hager, both of Mankato; three granddaughters, Mary Fowler of Mankato, Lori (Tim) Johnson of Maple Grove; and Amy (David) Crocker of Elk River; six great-grandchildren, Dr. James (Jana) Fowler, John Fowler, Zachery Johnson, Joshua Johnson, Katie Crocker, and Kelly Crocker; one great-great-granddaughter, Sarah Fowler; and several nieces and nephews.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert; her parents; step-father, Emmett Baynes; and her son-in-law, H. Joseph Hager.
