Marvin Lloyd Severns, age 83, of Mankato, died Thursday, April 29, 2004 at Immanuel-St. Josephs Hospital in Mankato.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Christ the King Lutheran Church with Rev. Donohue Sarff officiating. Burial will be on Monday, May 3, 2004, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Mankato Mortuary and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Memorials are preferred to VINE or Immanuel-St. Josephs Hospice Program.
Marvin was born in Winterset, Iowa on April 26, 1921 to Ida M. Severns. He grew up in Sleepy Eye and graduated from Sleepy Eye High School in 1939. He served in WWII with the 215th Army Artillery, serving in Alaska and Germany from November 1940 until his discharge in October of 1945.
On November 18, 1946, he married June LaRie Nelson of Sleepy Eye. They resided in Sleepy Eye before moving to Mankato in 1950. Marvin was a Coca Cola route salesman, later joining the Mankato Police Force in August of 1959. He retired from the police force as Sergeant in September of 1979. He then served as a bailiff at the Blue Earth County Court for a number of years. Marvin enjoyed fishing and camping, was an avid reader, and loved doing word puzzles.
Marvin is survived by his wife, June of Mankato; five children and their spouses, Marlene and Nylen Fischer of Mapleton, Suzanne and Dale Carlson of Philomont, Virginia, Thomas and Linda Severns of Mankato, LaRie and Craig Anderson of Chanhassen, Michael and Cynthia Severns of Minneapolis; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, and a son, Ronald Severns.
