Sister M. Petronia Schmaltz, School Sister of Notre Dame, age 86, died Monday, April 26, 2004, at Good Counsel Convent, Mankato. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Good Counsel Chapel, with Father Ted Hottinger, SJ, as celebrant. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Good Counsel, with Vespers in the chapel at 7:00 p.m. Visitation is also one hour prior to the funeral on Wednesday. Mankato Mortuary is in charge.
Sister M. Petronia ((Magdalena Schmaltz) was born June 15, 1917, in Wishek, ND, to Peter and Catherine (Heilman) Schmaltz. She entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Mankato in 1935 and took First Vows in 1938. For over 60 years, she served in food service and housekeeping in convents in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Washington. In 1980, she came to Good Counsel where she served at the Education Center for two years before coming to the Provincial House where she did community service almost up to the time of her death.
Sister is survived by one brother, Adam, of Tappan, ND. She was preceded in death by her parents, by her sister, Sister M. Lucina, SSND, and by five brothers, four of whom died very young, so the names were passed on to the next children. Her deceased brothers were Anton, Sebastian, Anton, Sebastian and Daniel.
