J.L. Jack Pepper, 72 of Mankato, MN, formerly of Sioux Falls, died Monday, April 5, 2004 at Immanuel-St. Josephs Hospital in Mankato.

He was born July 23, 1931 in Sioux Falls, SD the son, of Arthur and Gladys (Johnson) Pepper. As a child he moved with his family to Topeka, KS, where he was confirmed in the Lutheran Church, graduated from high school and attended Washburn University. They moved back to Sioux Falls, where he worked for Benz Funeral Home and attended Augustanta College, here he met Grayce Gronsdahl and they married on February 23, 1957 in Colton. He served two years in the U.S. Army and one year in the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge, he enrolled at the California College of Mortuary Science in Los Angeles and graduated from there in September 1960. Jack returned to Sioux Falls and worked several years as a funeral director for Benz Funeral Home. In 1965, he moved the family to Clark, SD where he managed the Community Funeral Home. They moved to Colton in 1969 where he owned and operated Pepper Funeral Home. He moved to Mankato in 1978 where he met and married Donna (Arend) Ramy on May 19, 1979. He worked at Woodland Hills Funeral Home until his retirement. He was a licensed funeral director in South Dakota (40 years), North Dakota, and Minnesota. His hobbies included gardening and watching football and NASCAR on television.

Grateful for having shared his life are: his wife, Donna of Mankato; three sons, Matt of Sioux Falls, Brad of Longmont, CO, Merrel of Sioux Falls; one daughter, Michelle Pepper of Martin, SD; three stepdaughters, Shari Baker of Grand Marais, Michelle Ramy and Sandra Ramy both of Mankato; 18 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Visitation in Sioux Falls will begin at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Visitation in Mankato will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Mankato Mortuary. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mankato Mortuary with Rev. Francis Kunz officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Mankato. Memorials may be directed to Immanuel-St. Josephs Hospice Program in Mankato.
