Glenn W. Carey, age 86 of Mankato died Saturday, March 27, 2004 at his home.

Funeral services 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at Centenary United Methodist Church, Mankato, with Rev. Dean Wolf officiating. Interment in Woodland Hills Memorial Park, Mankato. Visitation on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at Mankato Mortuary and one hour before services at church on Tuesday.

Born and raised in Wood Lake Minnesota, Glenn graduated from Hamline University in 1939. His many friends will be surprised to hear that he matriculated with a degree in economnics. At Hamline he met his future bride Ruth. At Hamline he was president of the Phi Delt fraternity, and lettered in football and basketball. He was a golden gloves boxing champion. Following graduation he was drafted into the United States Army and graduated from officers training at Fort Benning, Georgia. As a member of the Counter Intelligence Corp, he was stationed in Alaska, Salt Lake City Utah and throughout Europe. Glenn was awarded the Bronze Star after he parachuted into Holland behind enemy lines.

Returning to Minnesota following the war, he briefly worked for Commercial Credit in St. Paul. Settling in Mankato in 1947, Glenn first managed the Ford dealership and eventually opened up his own realty firm known as Key City Realty. He became well know throughout the community as he developed a number of areas including Southview Heights, Connors Point on Lake Washington, River Heights and Viking Terrace. He was a founder of Southview County Club.

Never humble where humor and promotion were concerned he named streets after himself and his wife Ruth. He loved to hold court with his many friends and admirers whether in many of Mankatos finest establishments or at home where he and Ruths doors were always open to whoever dropped in for a drink, a meal or just a good old fashioned political argument!

He was passionate about life and his wide ranging interests included a reputation for being a legendary gardener, a dog lover who always had a yellow Labrador at his side, hunting at his duck shack " (Hackberry Chapel at Swan Lake,) fishing, golfing and bad jokes. He followed every team in every sport and took pride in his betting skills as he bested his friends and neighbors. He was Mankatos legendary Irishman even though he was only half Irish " a fairly well kept secret. For countless years, he chaired the St. Patricks Day celebration at the Elks Club, turning the club into the best party destination in town.

He was a member of many local service organizations including the El;ks, American Legion, Eagles, Moose, and the VFW. He was a life long Methodist who enjoyed his brandy.

He loved Mankato and with his wife Ruth raised their three children and a long succession of beloved hunting dogs.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; children, Janet Dieterich (Neil) of St. Paul, Minnesota, Jane Carey of Aspen, Colorado, Patrick Carey of Madison, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Nathan and Nicholas Dieterich and his great hunting dog Muggs. In addition he is survived by two sisters; Evelyn Jansen, and Helen Lokken, many nieces and nephews and his legions of friends and admirers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Elizabeth Carey, and brother, Harlan Carey.
