Retired Mankato banker, Russell A. Christianson, age 88, died Monday, March 8, 2004 at Immanuel-St. Josephs Hospital, in Mankato.
Memorial services will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. Paul Meierding officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Memorials are preferred to an organization of the donors choice. Mankato Mortuary is handling arrangements.
Russell was born in Deuel County, South Dakota, to Theodore and Clara (Hanson) Christianson, on June 5, 1915. He graduated from Astoria High School in 1933. He was employed by banks in South Dakota, Iowa and California until 1942 when he joined the Army Air Corp where he served until 1946.
He was employed by the National Bank of Commerce in Mankato from 1946 to 1978 when he retired. He was a Board member and Vice-President of the bank.
Russell was active in the Mankato Jaycees, the Minnesota Valley Boy Scouts of America, North Mankato Chamber of Commerce, the Mankato Chamber of Commerce, board member of the North Mankato School District, Treasurer of Mankato Elks Lodge and Treasurer of Immanuel Hospital. He served on the Board of Trustees at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, was President of the Mankato Lions Club and Vice-Chairman of the Minnesota Republican Finance Committee. He served on various committees of the Minnesota Bankers Association and the Independent Bankers Association and was Vice-Commander of the American Legion Post No.11. He was a member of the Mankato Golf Club.
Russell married Lois Johnson on November 25, 1937. They were married for 56 years. Lois died in 1994. Russell married Ardyce Worrell of St. Peter in 1995.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Linda Solyntjes, a grandson, Tim Solyntjes and his wife, Judy, a great-granddaughter, Isabelle Solyntjes, all of Mankato; two stepsons, Randolph Worrell and wife, Gale of Wichita, KS, Bradley Worrell and wife, Betty Sue of Mankato; four step-grandchildren; a brother, Loren Christianson and wife, Gladys of Astoria, SD; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, parents, one brother and three sisters.
