Dale D. Else, age 73, of Mankato, died unexpectedly Friday, October 8, 2010 at his home.
Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 11, 2010 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. John Petersen officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the donor's choice.
Dale was born June 21, 1937 at Union Hospital in New Ulm, Minnesota to Melvin and Florence (Decker) Else. His family soon moved to Milnor, North Dakota where he spent his childhood. It was at this time that he developed his lifelong love for animals. To help support his family he also held numerous jobs during those years ranging from a pin setter at the bowling alley to working on the railroad. Dale graduated from Milnor High School in 1955 and subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959. After being honorably discharged he enrolled in Valley City State University graduating with a degree in education in 1963. He married the love of his life, Donna DeKrey that same year at Trinity Lutheran Church in Steele, North Dakota. He then earned a Masters Degree in counseling from NDSU in 1965 after which Dale and Donna moved to Winthrop, Minnesota.
During the following 34 years he dedicated his life to serving others through his work as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for numerous surrounding school districts as well as the surrounding adult community. In Winthrop he also participated in the Kiwanis Organization, Masonic Lodge, Shriners, and served on the board for the High Island Creek Group Home. He was an active member at First Lutheran Church in Winthrop and Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato.
Dale and Donna moved to Mankato in 2003. After his retirement in 1999, Dale enjoyed attending sporting and educational events at Gustavus Adolphus College. Dale and Donna enjoyed spending winters in Arizona, attending the theatre, and taking ocean cruises. He was also known for completing daily morning crossword puzzles in pen. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Dale is survived by his wife of 47 years, Donna; three sons, Derek (Mary) Else of Dover, NH, Doran (Nikki) Else of Urbandale, IA, Ryan (Beth) Else of North Oaks, MN; seven grandchildren, Collin, Audrey, Andy, Marissa, Brandon, Joshua, and Emily; brother, Ron (Deanne) Else of Warsaw, MN; sister, Melva Olson of Underwood, ND; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents.
