Whilma Nomie Smith, age 84 of North Mankato died Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.
A Time of Sharing Memories will be held Thursday, September 9, 2010 at Mankato Mortuary from 10:30 " 11:30 a.m. with burial following at Kern's Oak Grove Cemetery, rural North Mankato. Visitation will be at Mankato Mortuary Wednesday, September 8, 2010 from 4-7 p.m.
Whilma was born December 23, 1925 to William and Minnie (Ward) Oachs in Sterling Township, MN. She attended High School in Mankato. Whilma was united in marriage to Ovald Smith December 7, 1941 in Mankato. She worked for Hoover School District 77 for 25 years. Whilma enjoyed needlework, gardening, cooking and baking for family and friends, and in her younger days being a member of the Kato Kids Band. She also loved flowers and being on the farm.
Whilma is survived by her children, Gail Thovson and husband Daniel Fransen of Hutchinson; Carolyn (James) Hilgers of Madison Lake; Craig (Karen) Smith of North Mankato; grandchildren, Jimmy (Jill) Hilgers of Madison Lake; Eric (Rhonda) Thovson of Hutchinson; Craig Smith Jr. of North Mankato; great-grandchildren, Miranda Hilgers and Cody Hilgers; Bella Thovson and Dane Thovson; sister, Beulah McComb; sister-in-laws, Gloria, Marcella, Barbara, Marlene and Helen Oachs; special friend Glenette Johnson.
Whilma was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ovald, many brothers and sisters, many brothers and sisters-in-law.
