Benedict Robert, the son of Robert and Helen (Bangerter) Strand, was born on May 15, 1947 in Mankato. Benny was a special person who was known for his infectious smile and was loved by many. He was thoughtful and compassionate. Benny was so proud to live independently and pleased that he lived life his way. God gives everyone a gift and Benny’s gift was decorating his apartment and telling stories. He was also so proud of his family and was honored to be the grandson and namesake of Benedict Bangerter, who was the first paid Fire Chief in Mankato. Benny truly enjoyed life and would always say “I’m happy because I only think of the good things, I don’t think of the bad things”.
He is survived by his sister, Judy Appel and her children, Robert Appel, Thomas (Elizabeth) Appel (daughters, Grace and Lauren), Michelle (Kelly) Gregg (sons, Josiah and Levi), and Nancy Appel (Mitchell Sadoff); brother, Eric (Cindy) Strand and their children, Bob (Bryanna) Strand (daughter, Maya) and Tanya (Doug) Hawkins (son, Porter); step sister, Jolene Spitler and her children, Doug Jr. (Siva) Spitler (children, Thayer and Daelan) and Rebecca (Eric) Dellinger (sons, Gabriel and Xander); step sister in law, Judy Hendley and her children, Lyn (Joe) Rademaker (children, Jennifer and Adam) and Troy (Sara) Hendley (son, Jameson).
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother in law, Raymond Appel; step brother, Lee Hendley; and step brother in law, Doug Spitler, Sr.
