Bill O'Brien passed away peacefully at the Mapleton Community Home on Sunday, October 6th, 2019. He was 89 years old.
Memorial Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2019 at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Mapleton. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church. Burial at Calvary Cemetery in Mapleton. Olson – Tichenor Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
He was born on March 15, 1930 to Jeremiah (Jerry) and Ellen (Nell) Neaven O'Brien. He attended Our Lady of Good Council School in Fonda Iowa. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as an on-ship medic during the Korean War. After his service, he attended and graduated from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake Iowa earning a B.A. in English Education and began a teaching career that would last nearly 40 years, culminating in Mapleton Minnesota, where he spent 23 years teaching English and involving hundreds of students in high school plays. He married the love of his life, Lonnie Hill on August 24, 1957 at Our Lady of Good Council Catholic Church in Fonda Iowa. In their 61 year marriage, they raised five children, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Bill is survived by his children, Michael of Mapleton MN, Anne (David) Cutter of Oregon WI, Christine (Kent) Kuball of Hutchinson MN, Timothy (Eric Holtz) of Omaha NE, David (Heidi) of Blue Earth MN. He is also survived by the greatest joy of his life, his grandchildren -- Philip, Sarah and Will Kuball, Sam and Chris Cutter, Shelby and Keegan O'Brien, Ryan Ihle (Alissa Barre) and his great grandchildren Paisley and Paityn Ihle.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, his brother and 3 sisters and his beautiful bride of 61 years, Lonnie.
The family sends its deepest appreciation to the amazing staff at Heritage Place and the Mapleton Community Home, his Mayo Hospice team and Adara Home Heath, especially Faye.
