Clarence “Red” Herbst, age 93, passed away at Hillcrest Rehabilitation Center on April 9, 2020. 

 

A private family graveside service will be held at Woodland Hills Cemetery in Mankato. We look forward to sharing and remembering stories when we are able to be together at a future date and celebrate Red. Northview ~ North Mankato Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

 

Red was born on July 21, 1926 in Mankato to Fred and Nellie (Roth) Herbst. He graduated from Lake Crystal High School in 1944 and was drafted into the Army the following November to Germany during WWII. He was united in marriage to Eldred “Dolly” (Rossow) on September 2, 1951. He was the plant manager at Honeymead Products Co. (now CHS) where he worked for 36 years until retirement. Red belonged to many organizations, but being a humble man, he requested they not be listed. Red had a deep faith and was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran in North Mankato. In his retirement, he enjoyed reading, watching the Twins and Vikings along with fishing off the dock in his backyard and at his cabin in Cross Lake, MN.

 

Red is survived by his daughter Cathy Mikolai, son Mike (Cheri) Herbst, granddaughters Kirsten and Kaitlin Herbst along with many nieces and nephews.

 

Red was proceeded in death by his wife, father, mother, infant daughter and two step-mothers, Anna Williams and Ossie Jones; one brother, Charles (Jean) Herbst; one step brother, Hayden (Verna) Williams; four step-sisters Enid (Hamilton) Blackley; Ione (George) Kunst; Esther (John) Moritz; Marion (Robert) Williams and brother in-law M.D. “Tim” (Etta) Rossow.
