David Peter Michels

David Peter Michels, age 80, of Mankato, formerly of Belgrade Township, Nicollet County, died Thursday, August 5, 2021 at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 9, 2021 at St. Paul Catholic Church, Nicollet. Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m., Sunday, at Northview – North Mankato Mortuary, 2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato. Private family interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Mankato. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

David Peter was born November 14, 1940 to Walter John and Agnes Therese (Hogan) Michels in Mankato. He graduated from Nicollet High School in 1958 and Mankato State College in 1963. He was united in marriage to Rita R. Schmit on September 14, 1963 at St. Michael Catholic Church, Belgrade Township. David was a lifelong farmer in Belgrade Township and also worked at Alumacraft in St. Peter. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Nicollet Lions, Nicollet County Pork Producers, longtime leader of the Belgrade Boosters 4-H Club, and the Tri-County Fair Board. David loved gardening, woodworking, watching Minnesota sports, fishing, and he had a passion for livestock shows.

David is survived by his wife, Rita; his children, Todd Michels of Chanhassen and his children, Lauren and Ava; Troy (Mary) Michels of Eagle Lake and their children, Breck, Nolan, Avery, and Sedona; Tania (Larry) Kocmick of Sioux Falls, SD and their children, Carson, Rowan, Milan, Verity, and Handler; Tricia (Rhett) Miller of Sioux Falls, SD and their children, Finley, Monroe, and Greeley; two sisters, Myrna Yenter of North Mankato and Lois Jagerson of Madelia; sister-in-law, Shirley Michels of North Mankato; two brothers-in-law, Richard (Joann) Schmit of Shakopee and Robert (Genny) Schmit of Hutchinson; nieces, nephews, and extended family.

David was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, brother, Ronald; in-laws, Sylvester Schmit and Marie Nelson; brother-in-law, James Jagerson.
