Earl Vernon Fleming, 91, of rural Garden City, died Saturday, March 14, 2020 at Birchwood Cottages of North Mankato.
Earl was born October 19, 1928 to Earl Ruben and Leona Isabella (Young) Fleming in Mankato. Earl graduated from Lake Crystal High School in 1948. He served his country with the U.S. Navy from 1948-52. He was stationed in Atsugi, Japan during the Korean Conflict as an aviation machinist. During his time in the U.S. Navy he played football for the Atsugi Flyers Football Team. After service he was a professional wrestler with the AWA from 1953-54. He then worked construction in Minneapolis before returning to Garden City to take over the family farm in 1958. He married Nancy Anne Hagen on July 30, 1964.
In 1972 he began selling the Tox-O-Wik brand of products for the Tatge Chemical Company. Earl was a woodsman who enjoyed the outdoors. He was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Bethel Masonic Lodge #103 of Lake Crystal, member of the Lake Crystal American Legion Post #294, Morson-Ario-Strand VFW Post #950 of Mankato, and a Lifetime member of the NRA. He was a Ham Radio Operator (NØLTL) and volunteered for many club activities.
Earl is survived by four children, Valorie Fleming, Lou Fleming, Dan (Debra) Fleming all of Mankato, Arlene (Jason) Gerlt of Omaha, NE; five grandchildren, Arden, Evan, and Artemis Gerlt, Maxwell and Miranda Fleming; brother-in-law, Gordon Ballard of Winona, MN; nieces and nephews.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nancy on March 24, 2006; two infant children; brother, Arthur (Kathryn) Fleming; two sisters, Jewel (Kenneth) Evans and June Ballard.
As per CDC recommendations, No Public Service will be held. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Mankato. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to MCHS, Mankato – Hospice. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
