Edward James Mathews, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2020 at Crystal Seasons Living Center, Lake Crystal at the age of 101 years, 9 months, and 16 days with his family at his side.

Funeral Service 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 7, 2020 at the First Presbyterian Church in Lake Crystal. Interment will be in Cambria Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Lake Crystal Mortuary. Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church or Mayo Clinic Hospice.

Edward was born on April 17, 1918 in Cambria Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota to Harry and Ella (Jones) Mathews. He was baptized and confirmed in the Horeb Presbyterian Church. He attended schools in the Cambria area and Lake Crystal High School. On September 12, 1941 he married Kathryn Marie Johnson in Lake Crystal. They farmed in Ceresco Township and in 1947 purchased their farm eight miles northwest of Lake Crystal. His son James farmed with him beginning in 1965. Since his retirement in 1982 his daughter and son-in-law, and now two grandsons, Michael and Matthew continue to farm the family farm. Edward served on the board of the Federal Land Bank from 1952-1972 and was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church, Lake Crystal. He and Kathryn enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Winterhaven, FL. They moved to Crystal Seasons in July of 2010.

Left to honor his memory are his daughter and her husband, Kathleen and John Greenough; daughter-in-law, Esther Mathews; six wonderful grandchildren and fifteen special great-grandchildren; Steven (Wendy) Mathews and their children, Elizabeth and James, Kaye (Steve) Johnson and their children, Christian, Tucker, Kylie, and Caleb, Thomas Mathews, Kristina (Jared) Sorenson and their children, Robbie, Rachel, Reagan, and Rinnah, Michael (Janelle) Greenough and their children, Kaitlyn, Paige, and Alyssa, Matthew (Tammi) Greenough and their children, Carter and Carson; sister-in-law, Virginia Johnson; five nieces and one nephew.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kathryn in 2010; infant son in 1946; son, James in 1997; sister, Edna Marie in 1928; brother, Donald in 1944.
