Retired veteran and former North Mankato resident, Edwin W. Forst, 94, passed peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, May 23, 2021 in Prior Lake, Minnesota.
Memorial visitation will be 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, June 4, 2021 at the Mankato Mortuary, 1001 N. Riverfront Drive, Mankato. Interment will be at Woodland Hills Memorial Park in Mankato at a later date.
Edwin was born August 16, 1926, to William and Lilly (Hoffmann) Forst in Lane, South Dakota. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany where he met and married the love of his life, Lilli Lehmann. For many years he was a farmer and took great pride in raising pigs. In 1965, he moved his family to Mankato and became an active member of his church, Good Shepherd Lutheran. Many evenings and weekends he could be seen fixing, designing, and constructing various projects for them. He was a community activist before his time writing numerous letters to the editor of the Mankato Free Press. He enjoyed attending events at the Guthrie Theater, traveling the world, gardening, hunting, fishing, and playing golf. In recent years, he has enjoyed visits from his great grandchildren, who brought him so much joy and laughter. He was also extremely grateful for the care he received from the nurses and staff at McKenna Crossing Senior Living in Prior Lake, Minnesota.
Mr. Forst is survived by his wife, Lilli; two daughters, Dinah Gilberts and Jane Anderson; two granddaughters; two great granddaughters; and one great grandson.
He was preceded in death by his son, Gary; his parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
