Harvey W. Anderson, Jr. age 97, of Eagle Lake, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 9, 2023.
Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday May 17, 2023 at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Smiths Mill. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Tuesday May 16, 2023 at North Mankato Mortuary - NORTHVIEW, 2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato, 507-388-2288 and will continue one hour before service at church on Wednesday. Burial will be in Eagle Lake Cemetery, Eagle Lake.
Harvey was born June 13, 1925 at Immanuel Hospital, Mankato, MN to Harvey W. Anderson, Sr. and Augusta (Zernechel). He attended Mankato High School at Lincoln School, as the High School had burned down. While growing up in Mankato, he was a paper boy for the Free Press and also an usher at the State Movie Theater.
Following the patriotic heritage of his father and uncles, he enlisted and served as a Combat Marine Corpsman with the 6th Marine Division from 1943-1946. He landed on Okinawa April 1, Easter Sunday, 1945. It took 82 days to secure the island, and there were 110% casualties. How can that be? Many who were injured volunteered to go back into battle and were re-injured or killed, including friends from Mankato.
In 1946 he married the love of his life, Loraine Doss. Together they raised eight children. After the war, Harvey returned to Mankato and started Anderson Construction. For the next 50 years, with his Dad, brother Gene, and eventually his sons, he built over 150 homes in Mankato and Eagle Lake. They also built St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.
In addition to raising a family and running a business, Harvey faithfully served on the following: St. Mark’s Lutheran Church - Charter member, Smith’s Mill Lutheran Church - President of the Church Council every other year for 20 years, Eagle Lake Fire Department - retired with 20 years of service, Eagle Lake American Legion Post 617 – 50 years of membership including Post Commander in 1970 and 2012, Blue Earth County Commander, Eagle Lake Cemetery board, Eagle Lake Planning Board and Eagle Lake City Council. Member of Mankato VFW 950. Grand Marshal 2013 Tator Days.
