Joanne was born March 24, 1930 in Vernon Center Township, the daughter of Park and Vilma (Francis) Malvin. Joanne graduated in 1948 from Garden City High School. She was united in marriage to Robert D. Butson on November 18, 1948. They farmed north of Lake Crystal. In 1973 they purchased Acorn Hill Resort, on Leech Lake, near Walker. They operated the resort for the summers of 1974 and 1975. They moved back to southern Minnesota and lived in Garden City township until Bob passed away in 1988. In 1998, she moved into her home in Lake Crystal.
She and Bob enjoyed spending winters in Arizona for 30 years. Joanne enjoyed tending to her flower and vegetable garden, knitting, crocheting, pottery, sewing, painting, refurbishing furniture, doll making and baking. Her greatest joys came from family time, especially with her three great-grandchildren. She loved attending their activities, and most of all their visits.
Joanne is survived by her daughters, Roxanne Schuler of Lake Crystal, Kimberly Butson of Duluth; grand-daughters, Jennifer (Kevin Ostermann) Schuler of Nicollet, Emily Schuler of St. Louis Park; great-grandchildren, James, Jack, Lauren Larson of Elko - New Market; siblings, Marion Hageman of Torrington, WY, Maureen Hubbard, of Farmington, Bill Malvin of Carlos, Donna Soller of Le Sueur; nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Sarah Miller.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Cornerstone UMC.
The family wishes to thank Mayo Hospice staff for their kind and comforting care through her final days.
