Joseph Kubicek

Joseph Kubicek was born in Waseca, Minnesota to Dr. Joseph and Lulu (Bele) Kubicek on October 12, 1923. He graduated from Central High School in 1941. He served in the Timberwolves division of the infantry from February of 1943 in the European Theater of Operations until his honorable discharge in 1946. In 2002 he received a Diplome from France for his service in 1944-1945.

After attending Gustavus Adolphus, University of Wyoming, Mankato State, and the University of Minnesota, he began his career as a Social Worker and Juvenile Probation Officer for Blue Earth County.

He was united in marriage to Sylva Dahl on June 12, 1954, at North Waseca Lutheran Church. They came to Lake Crystal in 1959 and raised their four children there.

Joe was active in many organizations and served as board member for the Horizon Home, Blue Earth County Library, Lake Crystal School Board, Blue Earth County Historical Society, Garden City Township Officer, Rural Fire Association Treasurer, Environmental Services Committee, and the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library. He was an Eagle Scout and served as a scoutmaster in Waseca, Pine City, and Lake Crystal.

Joe acted in many plays at Mankato State, the Merely Players, and toured with Cherry Creek Productions of “Earthbird”. He was a poet and had a large number of his poems published in a long list of various poetry journals; both nationally and internationally.

Joe is survived by his son, James and granddaughters Kathryn and Meredith; his daughter Kathryn Moe and grandchildren Elizabeth and Andrew (Sarah), and a great granddaughter Salma Moe. He was preceded in death by his sons Wade and John, his wife Sylva, son-in-law Arthur Moe, and daughter-in-law Dr. Marilee Mead.

A celebration of Joe's life will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at the Lake Crystal Mortuary, 648 S. Main Street, followed by Military Honors and burial at Lake Crystal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:30-11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to the Lake Crystal Zion Lutheran Church Scholarship Fund or the Salvation Army.
