Joyce Schmidt

Joyce (Rinehart Sturm) Schmidt, age 92, of Mankato, died on Friday, April 19th, 2019 at Oaklawn Rehabilitation Center in Mankato, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23rd, 2019 at the Northview – North Mankato Mortuary, 2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mankato.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 22nd, 2019 at the Northview – North Mankato Mortuary and also for one hour prior to the services on Tuesday.

Joyce was born on July 2nd, 1926 to George and Hattie (Besser) Rinehart in Waseca County. Joyce was an only child. They lived on the farm where she had many cats and dogs and farm animals. She went to school in Pemberton. In 1939, the family moved to Mankato where she attended Mankato High School. After school, she worked for Kresge’s and Automatic Electric (Medtex). Joyce married Vernon Sturm on September 10th, 1947. They had four children and lived in Mankato. Vernon was killed in a semi-truck accident on December 18th, 1959, which left Joyce to raise their four children. Joyce then met Doug Schmidt, a widower with four children, and they were married on March 24th, 1961. Together they raised their eight children but soon they were blessed with three more children.

Joyce was a stay-at-home Mom, she enjoyed cooking and baking for her family. She also enjoyed playing cards, bowling, knitting, crocheting, and crafts. The family spent time at the cabin on Duck Lake. Most of all, she loved time with her kids, grandkids and great grandkids.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Hattie; first husband, Vernon Strum and his parents, George and Eudoxie Sturm; her second husband, Doug Schmidt and his parents, Leo and Mabel Schmidt; son, Drew Schmidt; and daughters in law, Nina Schmidt and Tami Schmidt

She is survived by her children, Suzanne Schmidt of Mason City, IA, Greg Schmidt of North Mankato, Wayne (Diana Carrigan) Schmidt of Loja, Ecuador, Sharon (Wayne) Mulenburg of Mankato, Linda (Joedy) Dubke of Fairmont, Jeff (Wendy) Schmidt of Mankato, Nancy Hayes (Al Januszewski) of Eagan, Alan (Della) Schmidt of Winona, Janis (Dan) Wolfe of Pequot Lakes, Julie Bohnert (Rick Schugel) of Port Orange, FL; 25 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; and sister in law, Betty (Norb) Rezac of Apple Valley.
