Judy O'Brien

Longtime Madison Lake resident, died February 5, 2024 at Mayo Clinic Health System-Mankato at the age of 84.

Judy was born November 10, 1939, in Mankato to Earl C. and Esther M.(Baker) Schmidt. She graduated from high school and later attended a few college classes.  While working at Madsen’s Grocery in Mankato, she met Roger O’Brien. They were united in marriage on November 25, 1961, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Mankato. 

Judy had been employed at Birds Eye and Brown Printing in Waseca, Brett’s Department Store in Mankato, LeCenter Health Care Center, and later at United Steel and Seneca (formerly Green Giant) in Montgomery. Judy was an avid MN Vikings fan and supported the MN Twins as well. She was an animal lover and enjoyed her nature walks.  She fished year round and even challenged her family to  fishing contests.

Survivors include her two sons, Kevin and Michael O’Brien of Madison Lake, three siblings, Carole (Allan) Esterberg of Maple Grove, Helen Gail (Dennis) Miller of Mankato, Dianne Schmidt of Mankato; nieces and nephews and their families.  Judy was preceded in death by her parents, her father- and mother-in-law, Clarence and Lydia O’Brien; and her husband, Roger O’Brien in 2023.

In memory of both Roger and Judy, a visitation will be held from 1-4 pm Saturday, February 17, 2024 at Mankato Mortuary.
