Karl William Sassenberg, dearly loved brother, father, and grandfather, died on December 24, 2020, at the age of 87. He will long be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, and love for his family.
Karl was born on January 19, 1933, to William and Laura (Sinell) Sassenberg on the family farm in Kelso Township, Sibley County, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church outside of Gaylord and attended country school. At the age of 15, he moved with his family to Mankato where he graduated from Mankato High School in 1951 and Mankato State College in 1955. He was a long-time employee of Blue Earth County, working first as an accountant in the Welfare Department, and then as Deputy Treasurer and Treasurer. He was the last elected treasurer, retiring in 1993. He enjoyed golf, music, travel, local history, watching his extensive collection of movies, and spending as much time as possible with his children and grandchildren. He was a faithful member of Christ the King Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his two sons, Steve (Cassandra) of St. Peter and Dan of St. Paul; daughter, Ellen (Vince) Sassenberg of Rochester; four grandchildren, Justin, Benjamin, and Lucy Sassenberg, and Madeleine Wagner; four step grandchildren, Devin, Martin, and Chelsea Wagner, and Jessica (Wagner) Merchant; and sisters, Florence and Eunice Sassenberg, both of Mankato. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Private family services will be held on January 9, 2020 with burial at Glenwood Cemetery in Mankato. Memorial gifts may be directed to Christ the King Lutheran Church, BENCHES, or the donor’s choice. Mankato Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
